How much should I donate?

You decide. Pay what you think the software is worth to you in your work. Consider making a small regular payment, or pay a larger sum as a one-off donation. It is your choice.

What am I paying for?

Your donation is purely a contribution in appreciation of the software and its usefulness to you. You are not paying for any goods or services to be received now or in the future. Hence you should donate in retrospect based on how valuable the software has proven to be to you.

Is the donation refundable?

No. A donation is final and irreversible.
